Research shows that students from underserved communities
have the most to gain via
regular arts instruction, yet many of Los Angeles’ inner−city public schools have virtually
eliminated arts education programs. In a recent study by the Council for Basic Education
(CBE), Raymond Bartlett, President of CBE, noted: "We’re seeing that low−income
minority
students are being denied the liberal arts curriculum that their more privileged counterparts
receive as a matter of course."
Research shows that sustained engagement in the arts nurtures
each child’s intellectual and
social development, increases each child’s academic achievement −− regardless of
socio−economic status −− and encourages adolescents to avoid delinquent behavior and
stay in school. (Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning, 2001.)
