About This School
Gabriella Charter School is an independent dance-themed charter school with grades K-3
(2005-06). The curriculum is rigorous and standards- based with integrated visual and
performing arts.
GCS seeks a partnership with parents to help students become active learners, setting their
own goals for academic excellence and social responsibility. Language arts and social studies
emphasize critical reading skills, effective creative, narrative and report writing and strong oral
communication skills. Links are made between the present and the past as current events are
related to the exploration of family, the neighborhood, the workplace, historical periods and
leaders, geography, diverse cultures and ecology. The math and science studies are
enhanced by extensive use of manipulatives and FOSS science kits that encourage exploration
while teaching problem solving and the scientific method.
All students take daily dance classes with professional instructors. In addition to providing
lessons in ballet, jazz, modern dance, hiphop, tap and Latin dance, GCS dance teachers
collaborate with classroom teachers to develop students’focus, discipline, work ethic
and standard for high achievement.
Students in 2nd and 3rd grade additionally take visual arts classes where projects
are often
correlated to social studies themes. Students also learn about famous artists and create their
own works in a similar style.
Parent involvement is high at GCS where parents pledge to contribute a minimum of 15
volunteer hours a year at the school. Parents assist in the classroom, maintain the gardens,
serve meals, supervise drop-off and pick- up and assist in the school office. Opportunities are
available for parents to take leadership roles in the Parent Organization, on the Gabriella
Charter School Governance Committee and by chairing events and fundraisers at the school.

School Description and Mission Statement
The mission of the Gabriella Charter Schoolis to draw upon the discipline, creativity
and cognitive aspects of dance to engage children to become more active learners
and to enhance academic skill−building by integrating dance throughout the
curriculum. The elementary charter school offers a challenging and innovative
standards−based curriculum that is complemented by the focus, discipline and
creativity of dance. The curriculum's goal is to stimulate children to STRETCH,
REACH, EXPLORE, PRACTICE and PERFORM as a means of achieving excellence in
the classroom. Gabriella Charter Schoolis committed to providing an educational
program that builds on a child’s natural curiosity and promotes joy in both the
learning process and in the mastery of skills.
Opportunities for Parental Involvement
At GCS, parent involvement is valued and required by a Parent Pledge signed upon a
child’s enrollment at the school. Parents commit to supervising and signing nightly
completed homework and reading logs.
Parents are also asked to reinforce school rules by signing and returning any
behavioral notices describe incidents at school that break school rules.
Gabriella Charter’s welcomes parent input regarding the progress of their
Child(ren). Teachers give four progress reports a year and meet hold Formal
conferences in November and April. Parents are encouraged to communicate with
teachers and administrators on an informal basis throughout the year.
Parents are required to volunteer during the week or on Saturday workdays during
the year. This can take place in the classroom, preparing instructional materials,
helping serve meals, assisting in the office or with gardening, making repairs,
designing bulletin board displays and helping to prepare for events. Working parents
frequently pick up classroom materials that can be prepared at home.
The GCS Parent Organization encourages parents to attend meetings that provide
information about new programs, test results, events, volunteer opportunities and
fundraising. Two officers of the Parent Organization serve the parents as liasons and
contributing members to the Gabriella Charter School Governance Committee.

II. School Climate
School Safety Plan
This section provides information about the school's comprehensive safety plan.
Gabriella has an Access Plan that includes maps and supervised entrance points for
visitors on campus. Additionally this plan sets routes for supervised travel of
students between the school building, playground and dance studios. Gates
enclose the school from the street on Commonwealth Avenue. Visitors stand before
a camera and buzz the office to be admitted to the property. All visitors are
required to sign in and get visitor’s or volunteer badges before entering the school
grounds.
Parents with cars drop off and pick up students in a designated loading zone in front
of the gate. All parents or drivers show GCS ID in order to pick up their children by
car or on campus. GCS has a Safety Plan that designates responsibilities to staff
during emergencies such as earthquake, fire, or lockdown. Emergency supplies
Including water and food are stored in a protected shed to be available for overnight
stays. Monthly drills are conducted to teach students the required safety
procedures so that in the case of an emergency they are attentive and follow
directions. Each classroom teacher has an emergency backpack and an accounting
sheet for students in the class. The school office and emergency shed are stocked
with first aid supplies. All teachers and administrators have been trained in CPR and
Emergency First Aid. Gabriella Charter School has applied for a grant from the State
to provide emergency training for staff and to obtain professional consultation in
order to continually update emergency procedures and plans.
School Discipline Practices
This section provides information about the school's efforts to create and
maintain a positive learning environment, including the school's use of
disciplinary strategies.
Gabriella Charter School employs a positive behavior model to teach students to
assume responsibility for making good choices during the school day. All classrooms
use a color coded chart that sets clear expectations for classroom participation,
task orientation and behavior. Additionally, teachers, instructional aides and
administrators, when appropriate, conference with students and assist students with
conflict resolution, Staff may also contact parents to encourage home support of
school rules. More serious disciplinary infractions result in student/ parent
conferencing, loss of privileges or in suspension.
The emphasis of GCS staff is on acknowledging and rewarding engagement in the
educational program. At Friday assemblies, The GCS community recognize individual
students for achievement, leadership, good citizenship or improvement in academics
or behavior.
