GCS parents are asked to volunteer 15 service hours per year. Parents keep program costs low by designing and sewing costumes for the annual recitals, helping daily to serve breakfast and lunch, greeting visitors at the School’s front gate, helping at morning drop-off, watering plants, assisting backstage at recitals and on field trips, fundraising and serving as bathroom monitors. Parents have organized monthly “healthy snacks” sales; holiday sales on St. Valentine’s and St. Patricks’ Days; and a large-scale swap meet with items donated by families and friends. These funds help subsidize the costs of the year-end dance recitals.
Monthly Saturday workdays are held for parents who are unable to volunteer during the week. Many parents go above the 15-hour-per-year requirement: in 2009-2010, four parents volunteered over 60 hours and one parent volunteered over 100 hours. Since July 1, 2010, GCS parents have volunteered over 5,600 hours to the school.
